“Fantastic and friendly”

Kambaku Safari Lodge

Jun 30, 2007

We stayed at Akeru in April 2007 for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon. It was definitely the highlight of South Africa for us! The owner made us feel so welcome and the whole camp is run like it's a family unit. The staff are friendly and attentive. The home prepared and cooked food is wonderful (and plenty of it) and the rangers are extremely knowledgeable.

Although Timbavati hasn't got the highest number of Big 5 sightings per day compared to main Kruger, staying here 4 nights meant that we saw everything at least once. We certainly got close encounters with the big 5, as well as antelope, birds, smaller cats, mongoose, not to mention the semi-tame warthogs that frequent the camp most afternoons.

The days are relaxed, the atmosphere chilled, the staff friendly and the whole experience unforgettable!

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon at the end of May 2007.

What a fantastic place. Please bear in mind this was our first safari experience and thus we have nothing to compare it to but never the less, we loved it.

The camp was very intimate and romantic, added to by the fact that there is no electricity in the chalets, meaning you use candles and lanterns for light.

The chalets were more than comfortable, 4 poster bed with drapes, bathroom with double shower/bath and a porch/patio area looking onto a water hole.

The food was magnificent and I do mean that. All home cooked and beautifully presented.

The pool area was adequate and the bar and communal seating area was charming.

The camp was open in which I mean with the exception of an electric elephant proof wire surrounding the camp, any other wildlife could and did come into camp.

This took some getting used to... for example we would be lying sunbathing when suddenly a troop of warthogs come is for a look, or the monkey who sat on out porch each night when we came back from our evening game drive!!!

Also we had a Rhino in camp one night and one of the communal sofas had been chewed to bits by what we think was a Hyiena!

The game drives were great... look the Timbavati is not Sabi Sands so perhaps the sightings of game are a little more hard to come by but you will see plenty. In 3 days we saw 4 of the so called big 5 and lots more.

If you are looking for 5 star, private plunge pool, butler service then this place aint for you although if you are I would suggest you may be missing the point of safari.

If you are looking for rustic luxury, a romantic escape, good food, charming service and great if not astounding game drives then look no further

“Fantastic!”

Just read the all the other comments made about this place, it is fantastic!

There were three of us sharing our bungalow which was good in size and despite being in the middle of the reserve had all the amenities you need.

All the staff are very friendly and really make you feel welcome.

Our ranger was Kerry and she was excellent. Demonstrated a good knowledge and had a good personality as well.

I have never been on a safari before so have nothing to compare it against but it has to be at the top.

One thing to note, it is on an unsealed road which is quite long and so may wish to get a decent hire car. Top tip: keep the speed up and go with it!

Enjoy!

“One of the best experiences of my life ...”

My husband (to be) and I stayed at the Akeru as part of our wedding trip to South Africa and Mauritius. From the moment we arrived at Akeru Lodge we felt part of a big family. We were greeted by Tibo, given a long cool drink and a guided tour of the lodge and told what happens and when. The food was fantastic and the cooks, quite rightly, were very proud of their cuisine. The rooms were very comfortable (we were given the honeymoon suite as we were due to be married the following week!) However, not much time is spent in the rooms as we took advantage of the two safari drives each day and the safari walks. The rangers were extremely knowledgeable and in three days we saw the "big five". Nights around the "boma" or the long dining table by the log fire were fantastic, swapping big game stories with the other guests who had been on the other jeep. The lodge only caters for 16 guest maximum, so you soon got to know the others. On our last day there was only three of us, but the service was just as good. I couldn't rate this lodge and its staff highly enough. A really fantastic start to a fantastic holiday.

“Exclusive and intimate Akeru”

My husband and I booked 2 nights by ourselves at Akeru, as a luxury 'get away' as part of a longer holiday with the rest of the family. The lodge is extremely comfortable, nostalgic in a colonial way, and a beautiful setting that will bring out the romance in anyone. Lighting is by paraffin lamp which is lit to welcome you back at the end of the evening game drive. Electricity supply is limited but a single socket is available to power a fan and to charge photographic equipment etc. Ceiling fans were being fitted to each room during our stay.

The lodge hosts only up to 16 guests at a time which makes for an enjoyable evening sharing game viewing stories across the dinner table whilst enjoying sumptuous cuisine. During our stay, there was a truly international flavour to the company, including South African, German, Austrian, French, Dutch, Irish and Welsh guests!

The staff were attentive, welcoming and professional and the Game Rangers were informative experts, eager to share their knowledge and increase our understanding of the bush.

I would not hesitate to stay here again.
