While traveling to New York City for a friend’s wedding, my wife and I decided to take an extra few days and journey up the Hudson River Valley, ending in Niagara Falls (okay, it’s corny, but WE’D never seen it). On the way, we stumbled on the old Huguenot town of New Paltz, and the lovely Maplestone Inn, a wonderful little B&B run by Sean & Patty Roche, with fantastic breakfasts supplied by their daughter Kayla, a trained Culinary Institute chef. It’s a charming 18th-century stone farmhouse, which the hosts have restored with loving care. We stayed in the spacious Tucker Room, with a king-sized bed, an old-fashioned casting stove, and gorgeous views (even from the tub!) of the pretty gardens and grounds.
The Roches really bent over backwards to make our stay a treat, even delivering a tray of coffee and tea to our door every morning a half hour before breakfast! Our second day there was grey and drizzly, so they set out a gourmet candlelit breakfast by a roaring fire. This was, hands down, the best breakfast we’ve ever had in our lives! Afterwards, stuffed and happy, we felt like just waddling back to bed and spending the day wrapped in their spa robes and the thick comforter. However, we managed to pull ourselves together enough to visit F.D.R.’s home and library across the river, and several quaint old Hudson River towns – but we couldn’t wait to get back to the Maplestone. We only stayed two days before turning in our rental car and grabbing the train to Niagara, but next time we’ll stay longer.
