“Give it a miss”

Cedar Tree Hotel

Located on the main road through Rugeley. About 5 car parking spaces at the front, a larger car park out the back.

It looks rather like a few old buildings that have been knocked around to form the hotel. There appears to be an annexe (I never like staying in annexe's, they are never better than the main hotel) so I have given that a miss and stayed in the main building.

The public gents on the ground floor was always a depressing taste of what was to come: Always damp floors, smelly, taps leaking or not working. I always think that if this is how you show the public your hotel toilet, it is a pretty poor advertisement for the rest of the hotel.

The hotel is near an "A" road, so I guess noise from front rooms may be an issue. My room was at the back, 1st floor. It was only just OK, quiet from no road noise, bed fairly comfortable, bathroom OK No bath, showerroom) A great big noise from the bathroom extractor fan that runs for ages after you switch off the lights. Tea and Coffee making facilities. Decor, so-so.

The Bar is a bit depressing, not the nicest pub in the area, service OK though. The stairs to the 1st floor are squeaky, and a bit depressing. Fire door slams shut, makes a big noise and may wake you up.

Breakfast is in the restaurant area. On a few occasions I have been a bit ignored. The selection of buffet items is about 0.5 star standard, low quality and not much there. Hot items tend to be OK, but you sometimes have to look for someone to give an order to.

Reception girls I generally find OK, they try.

Overall: a hotel that I would use in an emergency. I think which bedroom you get will make a big difference. Not what I could call "pleasant", not somewhere that you want to be.

“Worst Hotel Ever?”

Cedar Tree Hotel

Ive had the misfortune of staying at the Cedar Tree several times pre and post the new management. I thought the "hotel" couldnt get any worse but oh my goodness it has. I now stay many miles away from my work location to get a room rather than stay at this place.

In my time there I have witnessed an unbelievable lack of competence, very poky rooms, cold and overpriced food, showers that dont work and an ironing room that you cannot iron in as its so small (!).

If this is the very last option then go for it, but I would rather not.

“Awful”

Had to stay at Cedar Tree Hotel in Rugeley whilst with work. All I can say it was possible the worst 2 nights stay at a hotel I have ever had. I was booked into a single room in the 'annex' - bed was lumpy, mattress sinking in the middle, no wardrobe or anywhere to hang clothes, no easy chair, stained carpets, ripped wallpaper/paint, and don't even mention the 'bathroom' - very basic, did not feel clean, shower hardly any pressure. Breakfast was not great, but I was so fed up from the night in my room that I wasn't bothered anymore. This hotel is supposed to be 3 star, but it should be 1 star. I had to be in Rugeley a week later, and decided to change and stay at the Pum Pudding Brasserie in Armitage, 2 minutes from Rugeley - MUCH better, rooms 100% better than Ceder Tree and clean, comfortable and restaurant is great.

All in all, I wouldnt stay again at Ceder Tree, it was just terrible.

“Not so happy”

Once friendly, accomodating and willing to please with excellent food. Under new management, the prices have soared, the reception is cooler, the boss is is rather aggressive and the food I had was not as good as it had been. Many of the rooms (especially the singles) are very nosiy due to a busy road alongside Certainly better than the local Travelodge and saved by the fact that there isn't really anything much better in the nearby area. No longer good value for money.

Overpriced, very noisy location, no atmosphere in Bar. Not worth the the recent 50% increase in cost.
