We stayed at the Hotel Certaldo for 4 nights in September 2007, and were very impressed. As other reviewers have noted, the hotel is new and only opened in June, and the staff and management try very hard to please. From the welcome glass of wine to the substantial breakfast, which is served until noon, everything about the hotel is designed to make you feel relaxed and at ease. Our room was lovely with very tasteful decor, a flat screen TV and a very nice sparkly new marble bathroom. The swimming pool is quite small but very refreshing after a day of sightseeing. Certaldo itself is good fun- I really liked the place. There's nothing particularly special about the lower town, it's an ordinary Italian town with some good pizzerias & gelaterias. But take the 2-minute ride on the funicular railway at the back of the main square (Eur 1.20 return and runs till midnight) and you emerge in beautiful Certaldo Alto, an almost fairytale village of beautiful buildings and narrow streets, lit by torchlight on the first night we went. I don't really agree with the previous reviewer that there is not much choice for dining in Certaldo. We ate in the lower town on 2 nights and Certaldo Alto on another 2, all at different restaurants and there were still plenty of others to choose from. We particularly enjoyed eating at Il Castello in Certaldo Alto which is right next to the entrance to the funicular. The vin santo and cantuccini we had there after dinner were the best we had all week.
I should also mention that Certaldo has a train station (5 mins walk from hotel) which is on the line that runs from Florence to Siena so it's very easy to leave your car at the hotel and reach either city by train. Very cheap too- a single adult fare to Siena was Eur 2.80 and Eur 4 into Florence!
Overall we would thoroughly recommend Certaldo as a central and interesting town to stay in, and Hotel Certaldo, for us, was the perfect start to our holiday!
