“Lovely hotel in a great Tuscan town”

Hotel Certaldo

We stayed at the Hotel Certaldo for 4 nights in September 2007, and were very impressed. As other reviewers have noted, the hotel is new and only opened in June, and the staff and management try very hard to please. From the welcome glass of wine to the substantial breakfast, which is served until noon, everything about the hotel is designed to make you feel relaxed and at ease. Our room was lovely with very tasteful decor, a flat screen TV and a very nice sparkly new marble bathroom. The swimming pool is quite small but very refreshing after a day of sightseeing. Certaldo itself is good fun- I really liked the place. There's nothing particularly special about the lower town, it's an ordinary Italian town with some good pizzerias & gelaterias. But take the 2-minute ride on the funicular railway at the back of the main square (Eur 1.20 return and runs till midnight) and you emerge in beautiful Certaldo Alto, an almost fairytale village of beautiful buildings and narrow streets, lit by torchlight on the first night we went. I don't really agree with the previous reviewer that there is not much choice for dining in Certaldo. We ate in the lower town on 2 nights and Certaldo Alto on another 2, all at different restaurants and there were still plenty of others to choose from. We particularly enjoyed eating at Il Castello in Certaldo Alto which is right next to the entrance to the funicular. The vin santo and cantuccini we had there after dinner were the best we had all week.
I should also mention that Certaldo has a train station (5 mins walk from hotel) which is on the line that runs from Florence to Siena so it's very easy to leave your car at the hotel and reach either city by train. Very cheap too- a single adult fare to Siena was Eur 2.80 and Eur 4 into Florence!
Overall we would thoroughly recommend Certaldo as a central and interesting town to stay in, and Hotel Certaldo, for us, was the perfect start to our holiday!

“AMAZING!!!!!!!”

Hotel Certaldo

what an experience. Hotel Certaldo is one of the best hotels i have ever stayed in. the rooms were immucalute as was the rest of the hotel and a very high finish throughout. The staff could not do enough to ensure that our stay was a plesent one.
One down side to the hotel is they dont have a resturant for evening meals, but they will try and cater for you if you ask them.
i would advise that you go outside the town for evening meals as there is not a very large selection.......... unless you like pizza!!!!
as for the electric velux blinds they are sooooooooo much fun lol.

overall you will enjoy your experience at Hotel Certaldo, we did and will definately be going back. Kieran & Val

“Elegant and Beautiful”

From the moment my husband and I arrived we were made to feel like VIPs. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful.
The hotel was an old water mill which has been lovingly refurbished paying attention to every detail with exquisite taste.
Our room was a good size and my husband enjoyed playing with the remote control skylight blind.
The breakfasts were gorgeous, and fresh. There was every type of breakfast food you could imagine, including cake !
Certaldo is a charming town and Certaldo Alto is stunning. Just remember to take the ' funcolour' as the walk up will take your breath away.
Its only 50 minutes from Florence and the station is 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
We will definately be going back !

You need a car of course, to travel the cosy small nice places of Tuscany. Walking is a 10 minutes distance to the train station, but you have only trains to Florence or Siena (good enough to see). If you want to see the small nice villages of the Chianti hills, you'd better arrange a bike or a car.
Hotel is superb, just inaugurated. Rooms are big, with flat TVs and modern bathrooms. Breakfast is glorious, and staff are very nice.

Go for dinner to Certaldo Alto (hometown of Bocaccio, and accesible by train 1,20 euros return ticket). You have there frome pizzerias (15€ per person) to osterias (40€ per person)

Downtown you have lot of ice creams

“Great potential”

Hotel Certaldo

4 of 5 stars
Glasgow
Jul 10, 2007

Arrived at the hotel on the second day of opening and discovered that the pool wasn't ready yet. Amazingly, they got it ready in only four days. Experienced the inevitable teething problems that you would expect from a brand new hotel but found the staff to be excellent and very helpful. If they can prepare the hotel to its full potential and keep the staff they have this will be a fantastic holiday destination. Certaldo is a beautiful Tuscan hilltown - very quiet, not packed with tourists like San Gimignano. Great train links to Florence and Pisa only minutes from the hotel.
