“It was OK, but not great”

Doubletree Guest Suites Charleston - Historic District

Mar 2, 2008

This property was OK, but nothing special. The room on the fifth floor was VERY spacious, but definitely needs an update. I was there on business and there was no desk in the room where I could comfortably work from, instead I used this very small kitchen table with a very uncomfortable chair. The room had a slight odor and I found a used washcloth hanging along the shower curtain rod which was kind of gross. I left it there to see if the maid would discover it, but in the four days I stayed there it was never removed. As one of the previous posts suggest, I don't believe they replace the drinking glasses as there aren't any replacements on the maid's cart. GROSS! I have to say the staff was very pleasant and friendly, but if I were to return to Charleston, I'd probably stay somewhere else.

As the Evening Manager of the Doubletree Guest Suites in Historic Charleston, I was disappointed to read the review from the guest from Dallas, Texas. I would like to assure the guest that the drinking glasses are washed daily in our kitchen dishwashers and are stored in the housekeeping closets for sanitary reasons- not on the maid's carts. I am very pleased that this guest found our staff pleasant and friendly and our rooms very spacious.

“Nickel and dimed to death, but perfect location and free cookie at least.”

Doubletree Guest Suites Charleston - Historic District

Got an excellent price through Priceline ($70). Room was great, but NOTHING comes free at this hotel. So realistically, between the valet parking (there is NO where else to park) and no comp breakfast and no free internet etc our one night stay cost much more than that. You cannot even use a luggage cart because only the bell hops were allowed to use them and of course you have to pay for that service on top of tipping, so we had to lug our stuff up to one of the higher levels of the hotel ourselves, meanwhile they were bugging us to move our car from the prime location for loading/unloading in front of the hotel since we had not yet decided to use the valet at that point. It was a very uncomfortable situation after a very long drive, and we were very offended that they expected everyone who walks in to be made of money (which we most certainly were not, hence our use of Priceline). We gave in to using the valet since there is literally no where else to park your car if you want to be at peace of mind that it will be untouched overnight. Cars get parked into a very cramped parking garage under the hotel. I guess they don't let people park themselves b/c they have to use as much available space as possible (cars get trapped between walls and other cars) so you have to give notice when you want to get it out. You are able to access the vehicle however, so when it is time to load up you can take the elevator all the way down and load the car, or get anything you have forgotten. Helped us to avoid another high pressure-move your car fiasco a second time when we were leaving. At least we got a free cookie upon checking in.

That being said, the suite was very nice and spacious, but had a "Pricline" view. Pictures are posted. Everything was very clean, bed was comfy and bedroom had a big window. Bathroom was nice with granite countertop, also had a microwave, coffee station, mini fridge, and sink in the hall between the living room and bed room. Living room had a table and chairs, couch, TV and was very spacious. We were quite pleased we ended up with a suite.

Another good thing - LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Walk out the main entrance, go right, and there's the Market! All the touristy stuff is within walking distance, like market street etc. Next time we go to Charleston, we definitely want to stay in the Historic District but we may be avoiding the Doubletree (unless we win the lottery, and even then we may go elsewhere b/c I do not like giving in to greed).

“Great location--that's it.”

Doubletree Guest Suites Charleston - Historic District

Feb 26, 2008

The location of the hotel is great, within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. We booked a king suite. Our room was on the first floor and opened directly onto the courtyard. This was very loud at times, especially in the mornings when people checking out would pull their suitcases across the bricks right outside the window. The room was actually on two floors, with the king bed and very, very small bathroom upstairs, the pull-out sofa downstairs. The narrow, twisting stairs could be a problem for some guests trying to maneuver luggage. The glassware supplied with the room was not washed the entire time we were there, although we asked for it to be. We knew it wasn't because we were sitting in the courtyard while the room was being cleaned. There was no clean glassware on the housekeeping cart. It was rinsed and left by the sink. Even the paper coffee cups were rinsed and left to be used again -- disgusting.
The light switch for the bathroom was outside the room, so anyone using the bathroom at night had to turn the light on so it shone into the faces of those in the bed. Valet parkers were great--car came quickly when needed. I would stay elsewhere next time I went to Charleston.

“Pleasant Hotel, Fantastic Location”

Doubletree Guest Suites Charleston - Historic District

I wouldn't pay the average rate shown on trip advisor (we lucked out with priceline) but this is a rather large and very up-to-date hotel in one of the best locations in the historic district.

We love Charleston so much, and will be happy to stay here again because its a worry free hotel steps away from the best restaurants and sights in town.

We did have a problem with the service. We only stayed two nights, but the room wasn't cleaned on the second day. We were in the room into the late morning, so maybe they don't come back after a certain time -- still, I wasn't impressed.

Could have done without the warm cookies at check in. Just unnecessary.

“Great Getaway!”

Doubletree Guest Suites Charleston - Historic District

This was our 2nd stay at this particular Doubletree and we will be back! The hotel has not only an awesome location (right on the old Market) but the suites are really nicely decorated and very clean. The staff is super helpful and friendly. The young man who helped us with our luggage even offered to make dinner reservations for us. The beds are incredible - I want to get one for my own house! A very nice surprise for us this time was that breakfast been improved.. There is now a very large selection of food items (hot and cold) and several different juices to choose from.
