I spent 15 nights at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua in Maui in Feb/Mar 2008. The hotel and surroundings were beautiful. I had a confirmed and prepaid reservation for a deluxe ocean view room and I arrived in the late evening of my first day's stay. I was shown to my room and it was already dark so I didn't really know what my view was like. I was able to see the hot tub and swimming pools from my balcony as they were beautifully lit in the night.
My first disappointment was seeing the condition of the bathroom in the guestroom. The shower door was crusted with scum and the bottom had mildew on it. The floor of the bathroom had dried up spots from drips all over it. I overlooked this because it was so late and I wanted to get unpacked, shower and get into bed. I figured the housekeeper had overlooked this detail and would surely take care of these cleaning details the next day.
My next disappointment came on the first morning that I was there. I found that the view indeed was just of the hot tub and the first pool on the property. I spoke to the front desk about this and they assured me that this room was a deluxe ocean view. This is truly false advertising!
I enjoyed my first day down at the beach and came back to the room to find that the shower door was not any cleaner and that the coffee mugs were not replaced with clean ones, but rather, were simply wiped out. They were disgusting! The left over sugars and stir sticks were also just left laying on the counter top.
I called a few times to Housekeeping throughout my stay because there were no amenities (toiletries) left by the housekeeper. I finally got fed up with having to do so and went out and bought toiletries for my stay because it was so hit and miss as to whether I would get any.
The floors were rarely cleaned and when they were the housekeeper took one swipe across the floor without even moving any of the lighter furniture.
One evening the toilet would not flush properly and had overflowed. I phoned to Housekeeping. They said they would phone for someone to come to attend to the problem. The toilet was unplugged but the water that overflowed was left on the floor and no one came to mop it up. I had bought some dish detergent to clean my own mugs after I saw how housekeeping cleaned them so I had that on hand and cleaned my own floor. No one ever did show up to mop the floor.
The bedside tables and large table in the room were rarely (probably twice in my two week stay) dusted. I ordered room service one evening and moved away the Ritz Carlton books and magazines from the large table. The built up dust was disgusting!
Other family members were staying in two other rooms on the property. I noticed from being in their rooms that some of the details that I had seen in the website pictures of the room were missing from my room. There were no benches at the end of the bed and the beautiful bolster was nowhere in my room.
There was one last housekeeping detail that grossed me out. I was packing on my last day and decided to pull back the sheets of my bed and the pillows from the bed to check that I hadn't dropped anything. I was horrified to see a crusted-on fluid on my headboard right at my pillow level. I was disgusted to think that my pillows were rubbing up against it every night! Why would the housekeeper not have wiped the headboard?!!! It was so evident when there were no pillows there. I can't believe the housekeeper wouldn't have seen it.
When you are paying around $10,000. for a two week stay in what should be a top notch hotel you expect top notch housekeeping. The Ritz Carlton Kapalua failed miserably on this service.
I have to say that restaurants and serving staff were excellent and that the surroundings and property in general were wonderful. It's a shame that the housekeeping was so substandard.
