“Food very good but expensive”

We enjoyed our meals of linguini with clams and short ribs, but the short ribs dish was small with only 2 noodles in it. For the price of the dish, we were expecting more food.

We ate at a much better Italian restaurant days later, Volare Trattoria in North Beach.

We have been to this restaurant several times over the past three years, pre-theater. I have had some poor service experiences in the past, but never the kind of experience described in the other review. And the food has been okay but not great. However, I read a recent review on another site that was quite complimentary, so we decided to try again. At least from this experience, I would say they have changed the chef and done some customer relations training.
To begin, although the room is kind of a small and narrow, it is nicely decorated and lit and a pleasant room. It is my impression that they have recently redone some of the interior space.
This time we found both the service and the food to be above average. We had a lovely young girl from Puglia as our server. She was friendly, helpful, humorous, and efficient. All four of us chose the Prix Fixe menu; good choices and a very good price. We had the asparagus soup, the caesar salad, and the sauted mushrooms for starters. All were very good, particularly the mushrooms. We had salmon, fettucine, and gnocchi with shrimp as main courses. Again, all were very good, and the gnocchi was excellent. Profiteroles and creme brulee for dessert; again very good. Our server recommended a Honig Sauvignon Blanc that was great with the food. We did not feel rushed, but they made sure we finished in plenty of time for the theater. We will go back!

“Unedible, the absolute worst!”

Sent the food back, was charged full price, and the manager got in my face to brag how they had served thousands without any complaints. Well, the steak was burnt, with greasy cabbage piled on top, and the two pasta dishes were worse then the Olive Garden. No taste, oily, watery, and just plain disgusting. Hours later the taste still wouldn't go away. On top of it, the place is really in the balconey, and hallway of an old has been hotel (and even they admitted they don't suggest guests dine there!! That should tell you everything!!). Our waitress kept laughing because she couldn't remember the specials, and couldn't pronounce the word "Squash". SO we had to sit there and indulge her fit of giggles. When she asked us if we wanted more bread instead of just bringing us more, she got nasty and returned with three pieces, as if it was gold rather then cheap supermarket bread. Then our waitress was bussing her own tables, while the guy going around with the water pitcher came over and offered to cook us our food if we stayed. It was bizzaro. We just wanted to get out of there without food poisoning. What a waste of money. We just paid the bill to get out of there without a fuss, but the manager still cornered me on the way out and got up in my face to add insult to injury. This is literally the WORST food and dining experience I can recall, and I've lived through some real freak shows. There's nothing Italian about it. Believe me, I haven't even talked about the experience at the bar, the horrible live Jazz, or the eexperience just trying to get seated. Do yourself a favor and AVOID!!!!
