“A great experience at a great hotel”

Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown

We recently stayed at the Downtown Courtyard for business/pleasure, and enjoyed the experience. Having read some of the other reviews before we left, I was a little concerned but was quite pleased with everything.

The old bank building and renovations are wonderful and are much more unique than most hotels. We found the service to be friendly and attentive. The valets rushed to open my wife's door, we had great directions and recommendations from the staff, and our minor concerns were met quickly and politely.

It's tough to beat the location for downtown - you're less than 3 blocks from Gaslamp - which has a month's worth of restaurants, clubs, and bars. We only ate one meal at the hotel, although the bar's happy hour was pretty reasonable. San Diego is pretty easy to get around in, and the hotel is fairly convenient to the interstates and highways, and especially the airport.

We had no issue with noise (probably since we on the 11th floor). The valet parking was a little pricy ($24 a day), but I didn't see many cheaper alternatives. Plan ahead (i.e. send someone down 5-10 minutes ahead to request the car) and you'll be fine.

As a bonus, our room had a glitch with the pay-per-view movie system and we were able to watch for free anytime someone else ordered a movie (including some late-night offerings). Not sure if all rooms are this way, but it was nice

“Good location and value”

I stayed here one night for business. The hotel is in a good location downtown within walking distance of the train station/trolley station and a number of restaurants etc.

My room was a nice size and was very clean. My only gripes are that the towels are cheap and small and the in room climate system was not functioning properly. It would only blow cold air.

A couple of nice features include free internet access in the lobby with a printer and a nice on site restaurant/bar.

“Awesome location!”

I loved this hotel. It is near the Gaslamp district, a very trendy area with numerous bars, restaurants and shops. This district is a great place to go at night and you do not have to drive.

Make sure you stay in the Gaslamp district. Parts of the downtown are a little rough with homeless people - something I am not used to. I told my husband I would not feel safe walking in this area alone. Gaslamp is fine.

We hung out a lot at a place called the Tiki Bar. They have amazing drink specials and wonderful sushi. Bartender Brian is fun to talk to.

The hotel is a renovated bank building with a cool atmosphere. The check-in desk is the old teller cage, made of marble and has teller at the top.

We had a spa room with a huge whirlpool bathtub in the room. Our room was large and we did not feel cramped. I recommend paying the extra for the spa room with the bathtub. We did a lot of walking and the whirlpool tub was nice to come back to.

I had a major issue with the parking. The hotel rooms are obviously expensive. They charged $25 per day for valet. You could not park yourself in their parking area. On top of the $25, they charged tax, and of course expected a tip. Considering the room rate, I thought this was insane. Ever been to Vegas? Valet is free everywhere.

Because of the location of the hotel and its proximity to everything, I would stay there again and recommend it to others. We were within 5-10 minutes of the San Diego Bay for whale watching and the zoo - ideal spot.

“Nice location, everything else was average...”

The hotel itself has a great location walking distance to many of the clubs and restaurants in the Gaslamp district. Valet parking cost $24 per night. Our room had king bed but the room itself small and besides having free Internet access had few amenities. There wasn't a minibar in the room or even a refrigerator.

The hotel itself is pretty cool. If you stay here be sure to check out the old safe on the first floor. I would only recommend staying here if you're interested in being close to the gaslamp area although I still thought the hotel was overpriced for what you get.

“Location very good, nice atmosphere”

Location is terrific for Gaslamp district (I think better than gaslamp Marriott), less than a block for trolley to ballparks, pier, Convention Center, Old Town, etc.
Hotel is converted bank, nice attention to detail throughout. Rooms on higher floors on west have water views, on east nice city scapes. Standard rooms are adequate, a bit small, ditto the bathrooms. Sounds travel far too well; people walking by talking in a normal tones can wake a sleeper. The only complaint is the inconsistent concierge (all staff are behind 3 old teller windows). One shift was excellent, each person accommodating, polite, friendly, helpful; the other was the reverse (one person in particular was surly). Did not use exercise facilities or visit the attractive bar. $24 parking (I think high considering a bit of a wait for the car). Restaurant very open (grand old bank lobby), I think a tad pricey, but not unreasonable, and food was not excellent, but good (choice of eateries a block or 2 away is overwhelming; stick to breakfast at the hotel, go elsewhere for other meals). All in all, great location, nice atmosphere reminiscent of old world elegance, would probably stay again.
