We recently stayed at the Downtown Courtyard for business/pleasure, and enjoyed the experience. Having read some of the other reviews before we left, I was a little concerned but was quite pleased with everything.
The old bank building and renovations are wonderful and are much more unique than most hotels. We found the service to be friendly and attentive. The valets rushed to open my wife's door, we had great directions and recommendations from the staff, and our minor concerns were met quickly and politely.
It's tough to beat the location for downtown - you're less than 3 blocks from Gaslamp - which has a month's worth of restaurants, clubs, and bars. We only ate one meal at the hotel, although the bar's happy hour was pretty reasonable. San Diego is pretty easy to get around in, and the hotel is fairly convenient to the interstates and highways, and especially the airport.
We had no issue with noise (probably since we on the 11th floor). The valet parking was a little pricy ($24 a day), but I didn't see many cheaper alternatives. Plan ahead (i.e. send someone down 5-10 minutes ahead to request the car) and you'll be fine.
As a bonus, our room had a glitch with the pay-per-view movie system and we were able to watch for free anytime someone else ordered a movie (including some late-night offerings). Not sure if all rooms are this way, but it was nice
