This hotel is in a fantastic location....if you want to see new york is a short period of time, this is the place to stay. Its one block from Macys and Madison square garden, around three blocks from the empire state building and around seven blocks from times square. you really couldnt ask for a better location!!!!! the 34thst/eight av/ penn station subway is right besides the hotel and connects directly with the A line from JFK airport. You can get to the airport in under
40 minutes for around $2.00 single trip.
Our hotel room was clean and nice. The decor was dated, but the sheets and towels were changed every day, and we only used the hotel to sleep in the night anyway. One disadvantage is the hotel is right next to a busy road and it can get extremely noisy in the night...
...so do take ear plugs. also the windows have blinds instead of curtains so they dont block the light 100%.....but it wasnt a big issue. room size was ok,and we had a tv but no tea/coffee making facilities. bathroom was also clean and of a reasonable size. we were
on the 21st floor and had a fantastic view of the empire state building.
I had some other friend staying on the 21st floor, and they said they room walls were quiet thin and they could hear their neighbours talking. We were lucky to be in an end room (2140) where we didnt hear anything,so it might be worth requesting this when making reservations. The rooms are served by a bank of around 12 elevators, so you never have to wait long for one. The lobby is nice and spacious, and though there was a conference going on for the weekend,
it never bothered us. the concierge will give you all the required information and even book tickets.the staff at the front desk were polite enough.
There are some great cafes to eat breakfast open 24/7 all within one block walking distance,so it is worth making the effort to look around. macdonalds is right opposite the hotel and is open 24/7.
the hotel is undergoing extensive renovations but we could not hear any of it. we got a great deal from expedia for 5 nights, getting the last night free!
Tops tips will be to get the 11% discount card from Macys and bloomingdales and to visit SoHo for all the regular shops and street markets selling lovely jewellery. The guggenheim museum is undergoing
renovation,s o most of it is closed, though they still charge you full price, so do check before you go there. a nice way of seeing new york is the open top bus, for $50 you can see most of new york by the open top bus at day and at night. buses can get very crowded though if you want to sit at top,so do go early or go to the first stop. Also shop around for the bus, because apart from the red ones there are also blue buses which were less crowded and had a protected
top, so people didnt feel too cold in bad weather. the blue bus tickets were not available from our hotel, and later we wish we had got these tickets because the weather got a bit cold and it was freezing upstairs.
The other thing not listed in the guide books is Korean town on the junction of 23rd and Broadway,do try the food there. The pubs in greenwich village are open till late night. Macys has a once a year flower show from 1-15th april,so if you are visiting this week its a lovely place to go and its free. the entire ground floor of macys is decked up in exotic plants and flowers and there are free guided tours.
we got a 7 days metro card for around $24,but actually the hotel was within walking distance of most sights,so we need not have got it. also if you are using the airtrain,u need to pay $5 when u exit the train to join the subway and not otherwise.so if yo uhave good sturdy
shoes, invest in a 10 ride metro card which might be better value for people located in the hotel.
One last thing, there is a picture of the rooms online and our room was very similar to the pictures shown, though the decor was a bit worn.
