Was expecting great things from our recent four night stay at this hotel having read the glowing Tripadvisor reviews and having stayed in quite a few Sofitels in Europe, which I have to say were head and shoulders above this American example.
Location is very good although narrow streets do not allow much of a view out. Check in was efficient and friendly but Sofitel Priviledge card seemed to have no sway here as it does in Europe (however, we did benefit from a 4pm check out which was very useful and welcome).
Room allocated was for disabled guests. When we found this out we checked with reception to make sure it would be okay and they were not expecting any disabled guests during our stay. They were not but offered to change our room. It made no difference to us and we benefitted from a really huge bathroom with a shower that could have accommodated six people! The shower controls were however broken and kept falling off, inconvenient for an abled bodied guest, probably a disaster for a disabled guest. However, it was promptly repaired.
Beds were comfortable enough although the mattress to my bed was proably approaching the end of its life, linens good quality but the room over all was a little tired. We did have electric drapes (a few tears in the blackout curtains), essential for a wheel chair user as there was no room down the side of the bed to even get near the window. It was a nice feature for us to enjoy. The flat screen TV had been recently installed we were told and it was excellent reception.
We had breakfast each morning in the hotel. It was a pleasant enough space and the breakfast choice was wide if a little over zealous with very fancy and heavy dishes - presumably pandering to local taste and the (Italian) coffee was superb. The wait staff were friendly but inexperienced and service was erratic. Any variation requested that strayed from the menu threw them into complete panic and a simple request for coffee and croissant seemed beyond many of them. The cost was not unreasonable though. There is a small amount of public space which got very crowded in the evenings, the bar appears to be popular locally and very reasonably priced.
The Sofitel is a fair to middling base to enjoy Phildadelphia (which is a lovely city to visit and we very much enjoyed our stay there) and as we booked quite well in advance and got an excellent hotel web rate, we were generally satisfied with our stay. However, we noted the rack rate for our room was published in the hotel at $770 for double occupancy and if anyone does indeed pay that they need their head examining because it is no where near worth that.
