This was our first trip to New Orleans & the French Quarter, so I did a lot of research on hotels. After reading the reviews of the "St. Marie", I decided to go ahead and book it. Either I have very high expectations, or the other travelers were given a room better than ours.
There were some (a few) "good points", but our overall experience at this hotel was BAD, BAD, BAD.
Good Points: very nice bellman and valet, good location to the French Quarter, easy access to the freeway, nice courtyard
BAD Points: where to begin? We arrived (very excited) and checked in at the front desk with a rather unfriendly staff member. After paying for an upgraded "superior" room rate, was quickly disappointed when told that our room would overlook the street (and I'm not talking about charming street) and no other Superior rooms were available. I then suggested that I "downgrade" to a regular room. "Suddenly", a courtyard-view room was available on the 4th floor (top floor).
The nice bellman helped us with our luggage to our room and that's when the real fun began. Even with the air conditioner blasting, the room smelled terrible (mildew) and the humidity in there was gross. Everything was wet. To air things out, we opened up the doors to the "balcony". Are you kidding? Couldn't get a chair out there if we tried. Just enough space for 1-2 people to stand.
The furniture, although newer, was dark only adding to our misery. I didn't even want to sit on the bed - that bad.
We threw ourselves together and headed out for an afternoon in the French Quarter. Much to our dismay, the restaurant which the hotel staff recommended for "families" (Cajun Cabin), was located around the corner, but just beyond three nudie clubs and a dance club with drunks already spilling out (2 p.m. in the afternoon).
We returned to the room around 10 p.m. and tried to get some sleep. However, the smell was worse than ever, even with the outside doors open. My daughter's asthma suddenly kicked in and my husband went to the front desk to ask for a change in room. The desk clerk was very nice and mentioned that the staff sometimes "steam cleans the carpets but doesn't let the room dry out." Don't think that room had dried out since Hurricane Katrina. The new room on the 2nd floor was much better and did not seem wet.
The next morning, we went downstairs for the complimentary continental breakfast of stale croissants, danish, coffee, and orange juice. Yuck again. Flies buzzing everywhere on the UNCOVERED food and no staff in sight the whole time we were there eating.
Couldn't wait to leave that hotel and would not recommend. On another note, got very very sick withing 24 hours of leaving that place (high fever, etc.) and couldn't get out of bed for two days. Coincidence? Perhaps.....
