I have to be careful to not confuse the experience with the hotel with the overall visit. The hotel itself is a bit worn but the service is the usual impeccable Ritz quality. I stayed on the top floor with a great view of downtown Atlanta. Housekeeping was invisible but perfect. Had problems with key card but the front desk promptly reissued. As to the experience outside the hotel: boy, has Underground Atlanta deteriorated to the point of scary! Most of the restaurants are gone with empty spaces left. Most of the goods being sold are from "flea marketish" carts. I guess the "place to be" has moved north to Atlantic Station. We went to Fire Brazil restaurant across the street: not recommended. Probably the worst churasco (sp?) I've ever had. My wife had to run out and get a prescription at the nearby Publix. Armed guards and chased by a street person in a wheelchair as she drove off. Anyways, back to the hotel. Great if you want to stay in downtown Atlanta, close to the Aquarium, Turner Field, the Dome, the World Congress Center, and other sites. However, I recommend staying at the Ritz in Buckhead (10 miles away) and commuting to whatever event or site needed downtown. (Very little shopping downtown, much better in Buckhead.) I live in the north Atlanta suburbs and I'm shocked on how badly downtown Atlanta has deteriorated. I stayed at the Ritz downtown because I was at a conference at the hotel. (Better than commuting 40 miles to the hotel from my home.)
