Traveled to SA for Air Force graduation; A strong word of advice, rent or buy a GPS unit for your travels, this motel was very difficult to locate at first and is not at all near Sea World, it's about 4-5 miles from it. The desk staff (2 females) on duty around noon on 6/10/08 had us driving in circles for 2 hours with two tired, hungry and cranky babies after a long flight, people in the area all had their own directions or never heard of Alamo Downs Road/Drive or Ave., having to call the front desk four times after they had us on the other side of the city and way north or west, (several times we were left on hold or disconnected) they became very unhelpful, at times nasty, to the point of belittling, one girl saying "I know just where you are, turn around and get on Rt 151, we did that and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere; we called again, this time she was snotty, "you need to turn around", well, how did she know what direction we were pointed? We went to the Lackland AFB BX and purchaced a Tom-Tom GPS.
We arrived at the motel, nice looking place, pretty safe and clean but no great views of anything but parking lots, a car dealership lot and a highway; it's located off of I-410 and down a side street industrial park called Alamo Downs Industrial Park, no one ever mentioned that as the huge sign is set back away from the access road that runs along side I-410.
The two girls on duty need to have their job descriptions reviewed as their attitude reflected poor customer service and understanding.
Our reservations were made 5 months in advance, I requested a first floor room and close to the entrance as I have spine injuries with pain/dificulty walking. We requested two pack and plays (which were first come first served); we were placed on the third floor (room 320), we were given one pack and play which we had to wait 2 hrs. for. We loaded up the luggage cart, brought it to our room. The room was nice but the A/C was off, room very warm. There are no safes for valuables, those you need to leave at the front desk.
There is one elevator for the whole place.
The room had two nice/comfortable queen beds with a nice TV in one room, in the other was a love seat, TV, desk, chair, frige and microwave, all very clean. The bathroom was very clean but two sinks/large mirror are located outside the bathroom.
We drew a bath for the kids but tub would not drain afterwords, after three complaints and three days later, the maintenance guy finally got to it, he pulled out a large clump of hair. The twin sinks were also slow to drain.
We had repeated problems with the electronic door lock cards not working and we are well aware not to keep these cards next to a cell phone or other electronic devices, we learned that lesson in Disney World. After several requests and five days later, and having to replace our cards at least ten times, one girl pretty much blamed me for this, "we've never had that problem before, you muist be doing something wrong!" Well, there was a problem and it was the door lock assembly.
I had dropped my wallet which bounced along the bed frame, as I ran my had along the edge to locate it, my finger was pricked by a fragment of broken glass which was missed by the vacuum.
As we gave the babies their bath a half hour after first getting settled in, the room phone was ringing, the girl asked if we had the luggage cart, she told me I "had to bring it back down to the desk", I told her I'd be down in 10 minutes, she replied "well we need it now", she seemed a tad bit cranky.
The motel offers a very nice breakfast from 6:30 to 9AM with hot scrambled eggs with sausage chunks or ham, fresh wonderful coffee (which they ran out of often), fresh juice, three different cerials, milk and two nice waffle grills to make you're own waffles. The room is ample to fit maybe 25 people comfortably with aprox 6 or 7 small tables. I didn't like the fact (maybe not the motels fault but they didn't enforce this) some parents allowed their teenagers to walk barefoot or prepare their own meals, they made a mess! One kid came in barefoot and with no shirt. I said something but nothing as done about it.
There was usually fresh coffee available 24/7 for free when the cafe was closed. They also had cold soda and gatoraid, and some snacks and incidentals like razor blades, shave cream and fabric sofener. I inquired about laundry detergent, the girl handed me two zip lock baggies with what she said was Tide. I'm not to sure about that as I used it and itched like crazy afterwords (bring your own detergent). The laundry room was clean with two decent coin operated washers and driers.
The indoor pool and area was kind of small but was very clean and refreshing with a nice hot tub and sauna but was down the end of the hallway in the back, not really a big deal.
We had to constantly request extra towels from house keeping but every day they shorted us. Leave a big note near the coffee maker.
Two other girls who worked the front desk were awesome, extremely helpful, kind, knowlegable of the area, I wish I could mention their names, they deserve recognition, but they only worked one day while we were there in 6 nights.
Would I stay here again? Probably, It has a lot of plus' but they need to address some attitudes; the fact that they are short handed especially during peak season and a sold out motel and don't answer the phone in a timely manner, and they need to maintain their drains, AND DO A BETTER JOB VACUUMING ALONG THE EDGES OF THE BEDS, my granson could have been cut or swallowed that glass.
On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give this place a 6 or 7. If you came get a discount room rate, its worth it, but again get a GPS! Don't think that this place is near Sea World, that is a false claim and very misleading. Also, as od last week, you could not check or book reservations here through Comfort Inn/Suites website, they are, or were independent from corporate. I was told that was going to change. One good thing; we felt safe here and it was family friendly.
