“OK for Holiday Way below Intercontinental Quality”

The hotel is OK at best. It does have a couple of high points but is in need of much work. Here is my breakdown after spending a week at the hotel.

Rooms:
The rooms are in pretty run down condition. They are old and outdated and not very clean. Probably the worst part of the entire hotel is the rooms. They need a lot of work. All rooms ending in 05 such as 1405 are very small because of the stairwell. Stay away from these rooms. The city view side is not bad it does face the airport a couple of blocks away but the windows are fairly well insulated. You do have a distant view of the bay.

Casino:
The casino is very run down compared to the neighboring hotels the Ritz, El San Juan and Courtyard. We did not win any money at the IC but did well at all the other casinos. It is very smoky, full of rowdy locals and many of the machines do not work.

Beach:
The beach is nice for a fairly poputated stretch ot sand. Water and sand are both clean. Warm water in November probably around 80 degrees. There are reefs right off the beach here but not recommended to snorkel due to motor boats and jet skis. The beach is a big plus. Chairs from the IC and umbrellas are free.

Pool:
Was closed and has been closed for a couple of months they keep backing up the reopening date from early OCt to late to mid of November. The current condition is probably reflective of a December opening. It looks like it is nice but not open. Many checking in were very upset and we witnesses many confrontations with management because they were not disclosing this if you already had reservations. It is in very small print on their website.

Surroundings:
It is San Juan. Probably not the safest of cities. But we felt safe walking at night in the immediate 10 blocks of the hotel. There were a lot of police patroling the streets. You just have to be smart you do not want to be walking around by your self or with all your money on you. But it appeared Carolina where the hotel is was a better area of Puerto Rico.

Hope this helps. We would go back to San Juan however we would look for new accomodations next.

“Grrr-They returned our wedding favors !!”

Our wedding was September 2006 at this hotel. We (bride and groom) arrived one week earlier to meet with our wedding planner, dj, minister, etc. With the increase in airport security at the time, we had many items shipped to the hotel directly including our wedding favors, cake knife/server, etc. to avoid any problems with the airlines. We almost shipped the gown and suit as well. Whew !! Glad we didn't.

All boxes arrived... but the hotel returned them because the bride's name was not in the computer !!! Only the groom was registered. How can the bride and groom not be registered in the hotel? Who was the groom marrying after all? How is it the hotel staff is not aware that there is an event and become familiar with the names of the events? The bride's family was registered. Couldn't they have contacted one of them with the same last name and ask if the packages belonged to them?

Once this error was discovered, it was not until the bride and groom threw a temper tantrum that any efforts were made to recover the items. Basically, we were told, "I'm sorry, but she was not registered and the packages were returned" They did not want to initate any inquiries and try to get the boxes back until we made a big stink about it.

Needless to say, we are very disappointed in the hotel and the way the staff just brushed off our issue.

Feel free to contact us for a more intense description of our miserable experience at this hotel.

“Nice Hotel, Relaxing Environment but still Overpriced”

InterContinental San Juan Resort, Spa & Casino

Our three day visit started Oct. 22. The Intercontinental San Juan Spa and Resort is probably one of the nicer hotels along the Isla Verde beach front. However, compared to hotel spa and resorts found on the mainland particularly in Las Vegas it would only rank as average. The pool was being remodeled therefore it was unavailable to guests. This didn't present a problem for me because I enjoyed the beach and ocean which had easy access from the hotel.

We reserved a city view room but we told we had been upgraded to a deluxe city view. The difference was simply that the deluxe city view was on a higher floor (5 and above) instead of (2 - 4). Our view was actually very nice. We could see the airplanes as they landed and when there were no planes you actually had a distance (very distance) ocean view. The hotel is only 10 minutes from the airport but the noise of the planes didn't bother us. Others have written that the walls of the hotel rooms are thin, that is correct. The noise didn't really bother me as much as it bothered by roommate. One thing that annoyed us both was the television speaker in the bathroom. It was loud and intrusive. We actually had the maintenance staff cut it off. Instructions should have been left for the guests so we could have cut it off ourselves.

The Intercontinental was nice but I think very much overpriced. San Juan for tourists probably has seen better days. I think passing through San Juan before going on a cruise is fine but as a final destination you’re better off going to St. Thomas or Aruba.

“What is up at IC!!!!”

InterContinental San Juan Resort, Spa & Casino

Regrettably I was not able to stay at IC. I have been watching for a month and a half , concerned about the work on the pool area. IC kept moving the date out by 2 weeks. Last week called on 23 advised will open 30 or 31. Called 27 now changed to Nov 15.

Finally got my TA to call the hotel and they say not even the end of No likely.

Now all hotels are pretty well filled up.

In my opinion they would have been better to say pool closed indefinitely. At least that would be more honest.

“Great place!!”

My wife and I arrived Oct 6th and left on Oct 13th. We used Priority Club points for the stay so it was free. The staff was friendly, the concierge was very helpfull and the room was great.

We took a snorkeling trip to the island of Culebra. It was a lot of fun and a great deal at less than $90 a person. We set it up through the concierge (Rosie?) and were not disappointed. If you can't swim or you get sea sick, don't take this tour. Otherwise it is a must do!!!!!

The pool was being updated and was closed but the beach was nice.
We took the bus to old san juan. I would recommend that you take the bus in the morning but catch a taxi back in the late afternoon or evening. We caught the bus back at 4:45 pm and I don't think we got back to the hotel until 6:pm. It was jam packed with locals getting off work.

Overall we had a great trip. I would skip the observatory unless you are a trekie. We had a great stay and we will be back
