Palam is still used (by many locals and taxi drivers) to describe the domestic airport terminals. Make sure you know the airline you are flying with and which domestic terminal you are leaving from.  The airport was renamed Indira Gandhi in 1986 when the Terminal II opened).  The Airbus terminal for Indian Airlines flights to Bangalore, Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras and the Boeing Terminal for all other Indian Airlines flights. It takes 16 hours to fly from New York, 18 hours from Chicago, 20 hours from Los Angeles and 8 hours from London or Amsterdam. Since the roads can be very crowded at times getting to and from the airport, it is important to budget the appropriate amount of travel time before a flight.  The trip from the airport to town should take up to 20 minutes, if one arrives before 9 am. If not, the traffic can increase the trip to an hour. Most hotels provide pick up and drop off for about Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000.

However, there are also taxis outside of the airport. Travelers should be wary that taxis are reknowed for rigging their meters and overcharging. Therefore, it is recommended to use the pre-aid taxi services at both airports run by the Delhi Traffic Police; this can be bought and organized at the Baggage Claim; these taxis are black with yellow tops.
